Description

Fire King Crocosmia (Montbretia) is a favorite classic Crocosmia. Developed in 1905 by a Dutch plantsman, Fire King is prized for its tall graceful arching stems of crimson-red to tangerine flowers emerging from clumps of green grass-like foliage. Grow with other perennials such as blue Echinops, Salvia reptans, ornamental grasses, and other late season bloomers for a spectacular color and texture display. Plant Crocosmia in spring in well-drained soil with full sun to part shade exposure. Plant bulbs (corms) 2" apart and plant at least 10 per group for adequate form. Water moderately as the plant establishes (in colder areas it may not flower the first year), once it is established it is quite water thrifty. Butterflies and hummingbirds love Crocosmia, deer and rabbits avoid it. Great as cut flowers, they will last up to two weeks in a vase. After a few years, the bulbs (corms) may become crowded and flowering will diminish. Just dig the corms in early spring, divide and re-space them, and replant for renewed flowers next year. 24" tall x 12-24" wide.
