Description

8-18' tall x 6-8' wide. (Seed propagated). California Redbud brings an unforgettable display of pink to magenta flower to the mid-spring garden. Growing as a graceful shrub or small tree, this species is much better adapted to hot, sunny western climates than the Eastern Redbud (C. canadensis). Cold hardy to at least 0° F by its third growing season in the ground, protect young seedlings for the first couple of winters against temperatures below 15-20° F. This redbud grows in most soils including clay and requires winter frost to bloom. Native to the Great Basin area of eastern CA, NV and UT, it is usually found growing near seeps and seasonal streams. It's well worth the effort to establish this very special native flowering tree. Low fertility, well-drained soil.
