Gentiana hybrid septemfida x parryi (Hybrid Gentian) is a wonderful hybrid mix between a Colorado native and an Asian species. These gentian plants have fantastic deep blue, tubular flowers in late summer.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Gentiana (Gentian) is a large group of wildflowers found across the Northern Hemisphere renowned for their showy deep-blue flowers. It is often used medicinally by herbalists. Preferred growing conditions:
Plant in a fast draining, infertile soil with full sun. Avoid clay soils. Mulch with gravel or not at all.
Gentians like moderate moisture levels in the soil and should be watered regularly.
Deadheading is not necessary.
Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.
Special comments:
Gentians should be left standing over the winter and cut back in mid-spring to just above ground level.
Many species are mountain wildflowers and appreciate afternoon shade in hotter climates.
