USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
Veronica spicata Royal Candles (Royal Candles Speedwell) is a favorite perennial and one of the showiest, longest blooming selections in this genus. A durable plant with a low, compact mat of attractive 2" long leaves, it puts on a stunning display of deep purple-blue flower spikes. 'Royal Candles' is easily cultivated in average garden conditions in sun to part sun locations. A standout bloomer, it colors the garden from late spring into mid-summer. Deadhead the faded flower spikes to show off the plant’s dark green foliage for the rest of the growing season. Cut back in spring. 'Royal Candles' makes a wonderful small-scale groundcover or edging plant along sidewalks and paths. Try it with Penstemon pinifolius, Aquilegia or Nepeta. Great in containers too!

Flat of 18 plants will cover 18-23 square feet when planted together
