USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
15-18" tall x 48-72" wide (seed propagated). In its full afternoon glory, Wild Four O'clock has few rivals. A mature plant will have hundreds of magenta-pink flowers open at one time! This short grass prairie wildflower is one of our most xeric species with an enormous, deep-growing taproot. Plant it in any soil, even clay, where it will get plenty of sun and heat. Once established, it grows best when given very little extra irrigation. Semi-succulent foliage

Planting Guides
Mirabilis multiflora (Wild Four O'clock) - a widespread native wildflower found from Texas east to California. Resistant to browsing deer and rabbits. Pollinated by hawk moths.

Preferred growing conditions
  • Plant in any low fertility ("lean") soil including clay positioned in full sun.
  • Mulch with gravel or not at all.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, it needs no supplemental water except in time of drought (when a monthly deep watering is all that's needed).
  • Deadheading is not needed as this is a naturally ever-blooming species.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum Mix.
  • Special comments
  • Mirablis has a huge fleshy tap root once established and can't be transplanted. Plant where they stay dry. Excessive water encourages vigorous growth with no flowers.
  • First frost in fall turns the entire plant crispy and brown. Stems detach from the root and should be discarded or composted.
