Lemon Fizz Santolina

'Lemon Fizz' Santolina (Santolina virens) has fine, almost mossy-looking foliage in an eye-catching chartreuse color. The compact mounding foliage is evergreen and produces bright yellow button-shaped flowers in summer. It thrives in full, hot sun, but demands a sandy, dry growing site once established. It’s a bit cold-tender and is recommended as a container-grown plant for use around the patio when planted away from the West Coast.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details

This eye-catching Santolina has bright yellow thread-like evergreen leaves and bright yellow button-shaped flowers in late spring/early summer. 'Lemon Fizz' Santolina (Santolina virens) thrives in full, hot sun, but demands a sandy, dry growing site once established. Away from the West Coast, which is its favorite planting region, it is recommended as a container-grown plant for use around the patio. Plant in a sunny border, a stylish container, or in a rock garden. Suitable for green roofs and mass planting. Plant with Sea Thrift (Armeria), Pinks (Dianthus), and Sedum (Sedum). Other perennials that work well with it in containers are ornamental grasses like Blue Fescue Grass (Festuca), Yarrow (Achillea), and ‘Red Devil’ Verbena (Verbena).
