USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
10-12" tall x 12-20" wide. One of our favorite dryland native wildflowers, Melampodium leucanthum (Black Foot Daisy) is superbly adapted to life in arid lands. With decent rains, it will flower almost all summer, covering itself with 1" wide, white petal, yellow centered daisies on tidy, mounding plants. This is NOT a plant for beginners or drip systems (too much water). Black Foot Daisy prefers sandy soils and gravel mulch; don't plant it in clay. We grow our own seed to insure vigorous, garden-adapted plants. Low fertility, well-drained soil. Plant with Penstemon.

Planting Guides
Melampodium leucanthum (Black Foot Daisy) - a genus of wildflowers native primarily to North America with a few species originating in Columbia and Brazil. M. leucanthum is an ever-blooming wildflower native to the Southwestern U.S.

Preferred growing conditions
  • Plant in a fast draining, infertile soil with full sun. Avoid clay soils. Mulch with gravel or not at all.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, infrequent but deep watering is all this plant needs.
  • Deadheading is not needed as this is a naturally ever-blooming species.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum Mix.
  • Special comments
  • Melampodium is a tap rooted plant and does not like to be transplanted once established.
  • Leave standing over the winter and cut back hard in early to mid-spring, leaving 2 to 3 inches of stems above ground.
  • These are short lived perennials that should be encouraged to re-seed. When happy, they form showy colonies of tidy white flowered plants.
