USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
2011 Plant Select Winner. 12" tall x 10-12" wide (seed propagated). Jones' Bluestar, native to Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah, is a beautiful species with an upright vase-shaped form, large clusters of tubular, ivory-colored flowers and finely textured foliage with pleasing yellow fall color. Patience is needed while this plant sizes up in your garden. But this slow-growing native, once established, is very long-lived and showy, just like fellow native species Clematis scottii. Jones' Bluestar grows well in a wide range of soil types and makes a fine companion for other western waterwise plants, such as Penstemon.

Planting and Growing Amsonia jonesii (Bluestar)

Amsonia jonesii (Bluestar) - a western U.S. native perennial that is long lived and completely resistant to browsing deer and rabbits (all parts of the plant are poisonous.)

  • Plant in a fast-draining, infertile sandy or sandy-loam soil with full sun. Mulch with gravel, pine needles or other coarse, non-moisture retaining mulch material.
  • Water regularly the first growing season. Thereafter, infrequent but deep soakings are best.
  • Leave standing over the winter and cut-back to 3 or 4 inches in height by mid-spring.
  • Fertilize lightly in fall with Yum Yum Mix/compost blend.
