The latest scientific research has revealed that native plants, not Old World (non-native) species, provide essential food for butterfly and moth caterpillars that birds collect to feed their chicks. Very recent studies by University of Delaware's Prof. Doug Tallamy, in conjunction with the National Wildlife Federation, have revealed that certain natives are better than others for this purpose. Using this new information, we have put together regional collections of the best native perennials, ornamental grasses and shrubs to plant for the benefit of songbird populations. Now, we can all pitch in to help the songbirds raise their families and beautify our properties with hardy, low care native plants.
It contains (1) plant each of Blonde Ambition Blue Grama Grass, Kannah Creek Sulphur Buckwheat, Santa Fe Maximilian's Sunflower (Helianthus), Meadow Blazing Star (Liatris), Wild Bergamot (Wichita Mountains Form), Pawnee Buttes® Sand Cherry (Prunus), Golden Torch Goldenrod (Wichita Mountains Solidago), Lucretia Hamilton Desert Willow, Silver Ironweed (Vernonia), Standing Ovation Little Bluestem Grass, Desert Snow Mock Orange (Philadelphus), Fernbush (Chamaebatiaria), Undaunted® Ruby Muhly Grass, La Plata Silver Leaf Rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus), Thin Man Indian Grass, and Sky Island Orange Hummingbird Trumpet (Zauschnaria). The Pre-Planned Garden comes with a planting diagram and maintenance instructions. The plants in this garden are cold hardy in USDA zones 6-8. This garden collection covers an area of 135 sq. ft. in size.
