To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
Some years ago while living in eastern CO, Lauren Springer Ogden was faced with the prospect of revitalizing or removing a narrow strip of half-dead Kentucky Bluegrass along the street side of her property. She decided to take a more creative approach and planted that narrow strip of ground between the sidewalk and street with an assortment of tough, xeric, lower growing perennials. The concept of the Inferno Strip Garden was born. While not everyone has a street-side "Inferno strip", this garden collection is also ideal for other hot, sunny, narrow problem areas like those found against garage walls, along driveways or in raised brick planter beds.
The Inferno Strip Garden uses an assortment of xeric (water-thrifty) perennials to create a colorful, long blooming, low maintenance flower bed. We recommend that it be mulched to a depth of 2" with crushed gravel.
Included are a mix of the following plants (5" pots unless noted): Agastache neomexicana, Penstemon strictus, Salvia sylvestris Caradonna, Penstemon Elfin Pink, Centranthus ruber Coccineus, Nepeta faassenii Select Blue, Dianthus gratianopolitanus Firewitch, Veronica pectinata (2.5"), Callirhoe involucrata (2.5"), Aethionema schistosum (2.5" pot), and Artemisia versicolor Seafoam (2.5") for a total of 27 plants that will cover approximately 60 sq. ft for the standard size or a total of 18 plants for the small size, covering approximately 30 sq. ft. *We reserve the right to substitute a plant with similar attributes
Standard size (27 plants) comes with two maps for a choice of planting arrangement: 12 ft. long x 5 ft. wide or 20 ft. long x 3 ft. wide. Small size (18 plants) covers an area of 3 x 10 ft. wide. Order additional gardens to plant longer areas. A free planting map and care guide instruction sheet is included, showing how to arrange the plants and care for them in future seasons. Suitable for use in zones 5-8. Not recommended for coastal areas of CA, WA and OR as the Centranthus ruber can behave aggressively there. (Note: Not all the plants shown in the photo are sold in this garden collection. However, the overall color scheme and look of the garden will be the same.)
