Tips for growing Agastache
Agastache are sun loving plants with aromatic foliage and flowers. They bloom from mid-summer into early fall and are resistant to rabbits and deer.
Agastache need lean, well-drained soils, prefer gravel mulches, and appreciate deep but infrequent watering after their second growing season
To improve winter-hardiness, and encourage re-seeding, leave the stems intact over the winter. In mid-spring, remove old stems just above the new foliage, about 4 or 5 inches above ground level.
If your conditions don't lend themselves to growing Agastache in your garden, they do well planted in containers.

I love this plant. I have one that has made it for three years now. I had to dig that plant up and put it in a large pot so the city could move a light post that was near the plant. I watered it and re-planted it 8 weeks later. It not only survived but flourished. However, the recent plant I ordered did not make it. It is basically in the same location. I'm not sure why it didn't make it.

The plants arrived with strong root systems, but weak and spindly top growth... they looked like they were very young and didn't travel well in the heat. Long story short - they all eventually died. The phone operator said they would all come back from the roots, so I felt like I was not going to get help.I have bougth seeds from you, but will not buy plants again.

Hummingbird magnet, easy to grow
By Dave D
from Durango, CO
About Me Avid Gardener
Comments about High Country Gardens Agastache rupestris:
This plant delivers when attracting south bound hummers, fueling up for migration. This is a great plant to strart with for hummingbird garden because you will get blooms and hummers the first year if they come through your neighborhood. Lots of blooms- likes extra water for fuller growth but can get by with no extra once established. Kids like gently stoking the green leaves and then smelling their hands. Tell them it's a magical flower. I get Several years before it plays out and does not come back. Save the seed (size of period on this page ...) and grow in your windowsill - you will get 1st year blooms in July or August, until deep frost. 2nd and third year blooms are incredible! Transplant and give away - help the hummingbirds get south! Deer don't even take a nibble, no disease. Take out a section of your turf grass, shut off the lawn sprinkler and put in a few of these with gravel mulch. It will give you a great late summer show! Consider grouping a couple different zones in your yard away from each other-perhaps front and back yard. the rufous male hummingbird will guard these and run off the broad-tails. They will taste the whole plant each day. I haVe also had success in large potted plants in sunny south facing strips. Good luck!

Too pale and short lived

Nice color up close but too pale in my yard. It was hard to see the flowers compared to other brighter varieties. It died by the end of the second summer and I will certainly pick something else next time.

if the Licorice hissop stays small in your garden, try Desert Sunrise which grew 3x larger for me and blooms from May to December. A favorite for hummingbirds.

I love this agastache. It attracts tons of hummingbirds and it gently spreads by seed. I bought one, and now I have 5. I dug up two for my neighbor this spring and it transplanted well. It doesn't mind when I forget to water it, but it also doesn't seem to mind when we have a wet spring either. It is planted in heavy clay amended with composted horse manure. I put it in the highest spot in the garden so that it wouldn't get too soggy, however the places where the seeds have come up are lower and sometimes stay pretty wet for a while. It smells great (if you like that licorice/mint smell). Every time I brush up against it, my arm smells sweet for a couple hours.

Not the Agastache I ordered but it grew well!
About Me Master Gardener
A great Agastache. I have many in the garden. I originally ordered a different Agastache. One that can only be obtained from High Country Gardens. They sent me this one instead, didn't call didn't ask if I wanted a substitute plant just sent it. I didn't want this one as I have many of this variety all ready wanted something else. However, the plant performed well, grew large and fast and attracted hummingbirds pleased with the plant just not High Country Gardens and them substituting my plant order.

I love this with cacti and yuccas. Very undemanding and the hummingbirds love the flowers. Has a long blooming period. Try this one, it will reward you the first year!

This was a "bonus" plant that was added to my order. I have agastaches in the front and back yards. They are fragrant, reliable and fulfill my garden plans beautifully. This plant is no exception. It took off growing as soon as I planted it. I love agastaches.

A Work in Progress
By the old pro
I set out to create an area where humming birds would have a seasonal supply of natural food. The soil in my area is mostly clay and needs improving to grow plants of any kind. So my project is ongoing. Hope in a project is probably as enjoyable as the finished product. So on I go, buying, planting, nursing, hoping, and enjoying..
I'm buying for some friends who helped me- LOVED this plant
from Spokane, WA
Planted in a metal raised bed, next to main walkway in backyard. Every time you walk by and touch the plant, it puts off a beautiful smell of licorice. Two friends helped me with fall clean-up and they fell in love with this plant also---so, nice surprise for them in the springtime.

Very healthy plant, is three times bigger than when it was planted in April, 2016. Bloomed this past summer, hummingbirds loved it. I bought several and I will add more to garden.
from Birmingham, AL
Incredible display. Bees, butterflies and hummers love it! Bees overnight on the stems. We located it towards the front of the garden not realizing how large it would grow and may move it farther back this fall. Of all of the agastahe, this one is the best,

Impossible not to like the mint hyssops. Every variety that I've tried is a winner. Rapid growers, blooms from June to October. Hummers love it. See photo of broadtail hummer feeding.

Love this stuff
from Coffeyville, KS
Use this around a yard light in area difficult to water. Once established, it can go all of a long hot Kansas summer with out any more than an occasional summer shower. Also use it in raised flower beds. Enjoy the fragrance when brushing up against as I work in beds. It's pretty, smells wonderful and is tough enough to handle dry hot summer winds and still look great,

About Me Professional Landscaper
Agastache Rupestris is a beautiful garden plant with fragrant foliage and abundant flowers. Hummingbirds are very attracted to it, and it is not bothered by other animals. It performs well in the DC area. It has survived our recent very cold winters, even in my poor, clay soil.

This plant is the tiniest most unhealthy plant I've ever received. Basically, it looks dead and I know it had to look that way when shipped. It is the size of a tiny marble. But brown. I have come to realize your plants ship quite small but if I give them a year, they tend to grow. This will not be the case with this one --will be definitely getting my money back.

Merchant response: Good Day deb,We are so incredibly sorry to hear about your experience! Our perennials are usually sent with very little top growth as we keep them well pruned to ensure a thick, healthy root system. While our perennials are small, our plants have an advantage of youthful vigor. Many of our customers have commented on how fast our perennials grow with very little top growth. However, this was not the case for you. We are not sure what may have been the cause but please know that we are truly committed to your success. It is because of this, we offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee up to a year from the day your order has shipped. We encourage you to give us another call and one of our friendly representatives would be more than happy to go over your options to ensure you get the results you paid for. We can be reached 6 days a week at 1-800-925-9387Happy Gardening!
