USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
His Majesty Crocosmia (Montbretia) blooms with the largest flowers in the genus at 3-4" across. Like rich flames, the deep orange to burnt-red flower spikes rule the late summer garden. His Majesty Crocosmia is well-behaved but needs some room to grow--but won’t take over, like the friendly monarch it is! Hummingbirds love Crocosmia (sometimes known as Coppertips or Falling Stars), and both the flowers and seed heads make great cut flowers. While they are at their best with moderate watering, they are drought tolerant once established. With grass-like foliage that adds season-long interest, just cut it back at the end of the season once it’s looking tired. Crocosmia may not bloom the first season, especially in colder zones, but it is perennial and once established it will reward you with spectacular blooms. 30-40" tall x 24-40" wide.

Planting Guides

Summer Blooming Bulbs, including popular varieties such as gladiolus and dahlias, are planted in the spring and bloom in the summer. Most of these bulbs are tropical and require warm weather to be planted. There must not be any danger of frost and your ground temperature must have reached 55 degrees Fahrenheit before planting. Many of our summer blooming bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched), but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost. See page 15 of our Planting Guide for a bulb depth planting illustration.

As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. All perennials and spring-planted bulbs are packaged to withstand shipping and are fully-guaranteed. Please open upon receipt and follow the instructions included.

Perennials and spring-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your hardiness zone. Perennial and spring-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds.
