USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details

6-8"tall x 18-24" wide. Prunella grandiflora 'Bella Blue' (Self-Heal) is a vigorous, long blooming groundcover that spreads quickly to fill beds in sun, partial sun or full shade conditions. Blooming from late spring through the summer with short spikes of violet-blue flowers that attract butterflies, self-heal is an Old World plant traditionally used to treat skin injuries and other maladies. Prunella grows best in average to moist soils and is invaluable for stabilizing soil on slopes and bare areas. Best planted among taller perennials as it will overrun small, slower growing neighboring plants.

Planting Guides
Prunella (Self-Heal) - genus of wildflowers native to the Northern Hemisphere. Many species are used in traditional folk medicine.

Preferred growing conditions
  • Plant in most soil types including clay. Prunella prefers to be planted in a full to partial sun location. In hot climates, afternoon shade is best.
  • Prunella list medium to moist soils and should be irrigated regularly in arid western climates and given supplemental water during extended dry spells in the eastern US.
  • Mulch with common mulching materials except for moisture climates where plants should remain unmulched.
  • Deadheading will help to keep the plants blooming longer into the summer. When used as a large scale groundcover (lawn substitute), it can be deadheaded using a lawnmower set on high to keep the foliage looking tidy after blooming is done.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.
  • Special comments
  • Divide in mid-spring if plants are needed in other areas of the yard. Otherwise, they can remain undisturbed.
  • A favorite nectar source for bumblebees and butterflies
