USDA Hardiness Planting Zones
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
(12-24" tall x 12-24" wide) 'Vision® Violet' Cranesbill is an excellent choice for low maintenance, ground covering color, and form. The purple cup-shaped flowers nod above finely cut deep green foliage from late spring to early summer. Tidy mounds of foliage about 12 inches tall make a lovely border and fill-in for a perennial bed. Nice in containers, they are also beautiful with ornamental grasses. Foliage may be lightly sheared back after flowering to revitalize the plant, but it’s not necessary. A hardy perennial (zones 4-9), it is both heat and cold tolerant. Plant 'Vision Violet' in average to compost-enriched well-drained soil in a full to part sun location. It prefers average watering. Deer and rabbit resistant, bees, and butterflies love the flowers. Over time it will gently naturalize to form low mounding tidy masses.
Geranium (Cranesbill) is a large genus of annual and herbaceous perennials found worldwide. The greatest number of ornamental species are native to Europe and South Africa. They are not to be confused with the common bedding geranium which is actually a Pelargonium.
Preferred growing conditions:
Plant in compost enriched soils including clay. Position in full sun to partial shade. Mulch with commonly available mulch materials.
Geraniums like moderate soil moisture and should be watered regularly when conditions are dry.
Deadheading is not necessary. Many modern hybrids are naturally long blooming.
Fertilize in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.
Special comments:
Geraniums don't need to be divided. The width of larger growing varieties can be controlled by cutting off the side shoots from the crown.
Cut back in late fall after hard frost or wait until early spring.
