USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
30-36" tall x 18-24" wide (seed propagated). Native to the drier areas of the western Himalayas and Kashmir, this outstanding performer is right at home in western gardens where its stately architecture, large, handsome gray-green foliage and showy spikes of lavender-pink verticillasters (whorled flower clusters) make Kashmir Sage a highlight of the summer garden. This plant is invaluable for use in both sun and shade. Easily grown in most any soil, including clay, sand and garden loam. You can thank Panayoti Kelaidis of Denver Botanic Garden for his long time advocacy of this undeservedly obscure plant.

Planting Guides
Phlomis (Jeruselum Sage) - a huge genus of sage-like plants that range from Europe across Asia into China. Almost completely resistant to browsing deer and rabbits.

Preferred growing conditions
  • Plant in most soil types including clay. Generally, they prefer to be planted in a full sun location. Phlomis cashmeriana is an exception and does well in part to full dappled shade.
  • Mulch with common mulching materials except of moisture climates where plants should remain unmulched.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, weekly or bi-weekly deep watering is all this plant needs.
  • Deadheading is will not bring the plants back into flower, but keeps the attractive foliage looking tidy. Cut tall flowering stems where they emerge from the mound of low foliage.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.
  • Special comments
  • Phlomis seed heads are ornamental and provide winter interest; leave standing over the winter and cut off in early to mid-spring along with the old foliage.
  • Many species can be divided in mid-spring if more plants are needed.
  • These are low care perennials that don't like rich soil or a lot of water; this makes the plants leggy and prone to flopping.
