USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
15-18" x 15-18" wide. Bring the deep blue sky down into your garden with Spanish Blue Flax. Native to the foothills and mountains of northern Spain, this wildflower gem is most at home, not in formal flower beds, but along paths, in among rocks and other areas with poor soil. Encourage the plant to re-seed itself and it will gently spread itself into your landscape. Linum narbonense is reported to be a longer-lived perennial than common Linum perenne.

Planting Guides
Linum (Flax) - a large family of wildflowers found throughout the temperate and sub-tropical regions of the world.

Preferred growing conditions
  • Plant in a fast draining, infertile soil with full sun. Avoid clay soils. Mulch with gravel or not at all.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, infrequent but deep watering is all this plant needs.
  • Deadheading is not needed, and re-seeding is encouraged.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.
  • Special comments
    • Linum is a tap rooted plant and does not like to be transplanted or divided once established.
    • Plants can be short-lived (3 years, occasionally longer) and should be encouraged to re-seed themselves. Planting them in areas mulched with gravel is recommended.
    • Leave standing over the winter and cut back in early spring just above the rosette of new leaves around the crown.
