USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Planting Guides

Centranthus ruber (Jupiter's Beard) is a long-blooming European wildflower that is easy-to-grow and provides ample nectar for butterflies.

Preferred growing conditions:

  1. Centranthus grows well in a wide range of soil types, including clay.
  2. It can be mulched in dry climates with a variety of mulch types, including gravel in waterwise landscapes (xeriscapes).
  3. After the second growing seasons, it only requires deep but infrequent watering. Take care not to overwater established plants.
  4. Plant in full or part sun conditions. (Plants can become floppy if planted in part shade and watered too much.)
  5. Adding just a few handfuls of compost and Yum Yum Mix to the planting hole is enough. This plant doesn't like a rich, highly-amended soil.

Special comments:

  • Centranthus is a willing re-seeder and can become a bit weedy in a moist garden. Deadheading after the late spring/early summer flush of flowers will reduce unwanted seedlings.

Garden care:

  1. Fertilize Centranthus just once in fall with Yum Yum Mix and Planters II.
  2. In moister climates, cut back the stems to a height of 2-3" inches in late fall to prevent rotting of stems and foliage.
  3. In dry western regions, wait until mid-spring to cut them back.
