USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details

A wonderful native wildflower from Canada and the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains, most often found above 7,000 feet, Rocky Mountain Goldenrod (Solidago multiradiata) has a different look than is typical of the genus. The flower clusters are rounded with relatively large individual yellow flowers, not the typical long, nodding spikes of tiny yellow flowers. Long after flowers have faded, fuzzy seeds persist, adding fall and winter interest. Its native range includes the alpine and subalpine climates of mountain ranges in Alaska, most of Canada, and the Western US, including Arizona, New Mexico, and California. Also called Alpine Goldenrod, Rocky Mountain Goldenrod should be grown in the Western US where it will enjoy cooler summer nights, as it will suffer from heat and hot, muggy nights in the Eastern US. Like all Goldenrods, this is an essential nectar plant for pollinating insects and food plant for other beneficial insects. Recommended companion plants include Corsican Perennial Pansy (Viola Corsica), Coral Canyon Twinspur (Diascia integerrima), and Festuca grass (Festuca).

Growing Solidago (Goldenrod)
This is a group of summer/fall blooming native wildflowers that are easy-to-grow and provide ample nectar for butterflies and bees. Goldenrods are resistant to browsing rabbits and deer. Contrary to popular belief, these perennials DON'T cause allergies; their pollen is sticky, not windblown, and is moved from plant to plant by bees.

    Preferred growing conditions:
  • They grow easily in all types of soil including clay.
  • Goldenrod benefits from mulching in hot, dry climates and is amenable to most common types of mulch, including crushed gravel in xeriscapes.
  • After their second growing season, Solidago only requires deep but infrequent watering.
  • Plant in full, hot sun.
  • Just a few handfuls of compost and Yum Yum Mix in the planting hole is enough. It’s not necessary to plant into a rich, highly amended soil.
    • Special comments:
    • These perennials are easily divided in the spring if they get too large for their planting spot or you if want to have additional plants elsewhere in your landscape.
    • Garden care:
    • Fertilize Solidago just once in fall with Yum Yum Mix and Planters II.
    • Leave them standing over the winter and cut back to 1-2" inches above the soil in mid- to late spring when the plants begin to wake up.
