USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Tips On Growing Geum triflorum (Prairie Smoke)

Geum triflorum (Prairie Smoke) is a native prairie plant enjoyed for its showy seed plumes. Spreads by rhizomes to form a colorful, long-lived groundcover.
Preferred growing conditions:

  • Plant in infertile (lean), fast-draining soils. Not suitable for clay soils.
  • Enjoys full sun in cooler summer climates or afternoon shade in hotter regions.
  • Water transplants regularly for the first growing season and provide drier conditions once established.
  • Do not deadhead the flowers because the fluffy pink seed heads are the plant’s most outstanding ornamental feature.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum Mix.

Special comments:

  • Prairie Smoke makes a nice, long-lived groundcover and is an excellent companion plant for ornamental grasses.
  • Cut back to the ground in early to mid-spring.
  • Easily divided in early spring when additional plants are needed in the garden; otherwise, leave the plants undisturbed.
