USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Tips On Growing Callirhoe (Poppy Mallow)

Callirhoe (Poppy Mallow) - is a native genus of magenta or pink blooming perennials from the prairies and meadows of the mid-section of the US.

Preferred growing conditions:

  • Plant in most any soil including clay with full sun conditions. In dry Western US, mulch with gravel or other coarse texted non-bark mulch. No mulch need in Eastern US.
  • Keep regularly watered for the first growing season to establish the roots. Thereafer, infrequent but deep watering is best.
  • Protect from browsing rabbits.
  • Fertilize lightly in fall with Yum Yum Mix/compost blend.

Special comments:

  • Deadhead to prolong blooming. Cut back hard in early to mid-spring just above where the stems emerge from the carrot-like root. Stems will often detach themselves.
  • Plants are generally tap-rooted and shouldn't be divided or moved after they are established.
