Cupid’s Dart (Catananche caerulea) is a perennial wildflower grown for its tall stems of charming lavender-blue flowers that appear in mid-summer, attracting butterflies. Flowers bloom on tall, wiry stems over low, grassy foliage. Catananche is a popular cottage garden species that mixes easily into the perennial border where it will re-seed itself when happy. Excellent for mass planting, and fresh or dried flowers.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Cupid’s Dart (Catananche caerulea) is a popular perennial
wildflower from the Mediterranean regions of southern Europe, enjoyed for its lavender-blue
flowers from mid-summer into early fall. The common name, Cupid’s Dart, is
derived from its use by the early Greeks and Romans to make love potions. Best
grown in loose, well-draining soil that has a balance of loam and sand, with medium
moisture. Avoid unamended heavy clay soils and wet soils, especially in winter.
Plants do not perform well in the heat and humidity of the deep South. Recommended
companion plant for Shasta Daisy (Chrysanthemum), White Coneflower
(Echinacea purpurea), and summer-blooming Alliums.
