USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

This High Country Gardens grama grass selection will be the star of your summer garden. Zig Zag Grama Grass (Bouteloua x 'Zig Zag' PPAF) was discovered by High Country Gardens Chief Horticulturist, David Salman, growing in Santa Fe, NM. With a compact form, this low-maintenance grass is ideal for mass planting and small space gardens. This is a xeric native selection that grows in hot sites with poor sandy, rocky, or loam soil. 'Zig Zag' is recommended for gardens west of the Mississippi and climates that receive 20'' or less of rain and snow each year, and is suitable for high elevations above 7,000 feet. It’s a fantastic, long-lived perennial to complement all types of perennials and other ornamental grasses, including Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium), Ratibida (Prairie Coneflower), and native bush sages (Salvia).

Caring For Blonde Ambition Blue Grama Grass

Cutting back Blonde Ambition Blue Grama Grass (Bouteloua gracilis Blonde Ambition) should be done in mid-spring when the new green grass blades begin to sprout from the crown. The stems holding the seed heads are very resilient and stay upright even after a snowy winter, so the grass looks good until mid-spring.

Cut back to a height of 2 to 3 inches above ground level and scratch out the crown with gloved hands to loosen thatch and make room for the new growth to push up and out.

Mulching: Blonde Ambition (and many ornamental grasses) don't need mulching. But if planted in a mulched bed, Blonde Ambition is very adaptable as to the type of mulch. We recommend that the mulch layer around the plant be thin (less than an inch deep).
