USDA Hardiness Planting Zones
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
12-15" tall x 18-24" wide. Who can resist this fragrant perennial's chocolate scented flowers? Step into the garden on a still morning where Berlandiera has been planted, and you'll marvel at the sweet aroma of chocolate that finds your nose. Our HCG selection of Chocolate Flower was collected at high elevation in Mora County, New Mexico and thrives in bone chilling USDA zone 4 winters. Now, enjoy Chocolate Flower all across the cold areas of the West.

Tips On Growing Berlandiera (Chocolate Flower)
Growing Berlandiera (Chocolate Flower) - An Old World species used as a small-scale ground cover.
Preferred growing conditions:
Plant in most any soil including clay with full sun conditions.
Mulch with gravel to encourage re-seeding. Otherwise, mulching is not needed.
Keep regularly watered for the first growing season to establish the roots. Infrequent but deep watering thereafter. Too much will cause the plant to get floppy.
Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum Mix/compost blend.
Special comments:
Deadhead to prolong blooming. Cut back hard in early to mid-spring to a height of 2 to 3 inches.
Plants have a tap root and should not be divided or transplanted once established.
