I have several of these planted on a hot, western facing exposure. In clay. Once established, very little TLC is required, other than an occasional soaking when the ground gets really dry and hard. I planted several of these a few years ago and have been really impressed with thier hardiness and ability to thrive under harsh conditions. Hummingbirds like them, also.

Plant this plant with care. My plant sprawled over the cement driveway and turned it black. The stain does not wash off. It also stained all the pink gravel mulch dark brown-black and since the plant lost all it's leaves and died right back to the surface it is very unattractive now until it recovers the area. But it spreads very well and is hardy AND the hummingbirds love it. It's a great plant as long as it's placed somewhere where the staining isn't an issue - like wood chips or just mulched soil.

Comments about High Country Gardens Zauschneria canum var. arizonica Sky Island Orange:
Bought two of these. One took off, and the other was consistently nibbled by the deer & rabbits. As soon as either one started blooming, it attracted attention and got eaten. Plants are also somewhat brittle and have a lot of broken branches (maybe if I can keep the dogs out of the beds!!!). Gorgeous plant, looking forward to see what it does next year!

I got this in the spring...it was small but I had hope for it. I put it in a small pot on the patio all summer..the greenery was healthy...toward the end of the summer it really started getting full looking and then the flowers came. Wow! Gorgeous shade of bright orange. The hummingbirds love it and so do I. I plan to order more in the spring.

This plant arrived very healthy. When our summer got hot, the bottom stems starting dying. I needed to water more. I am waiting to see if that helps it.

About Me Master Gardener
Put it in front of my home where I took out a very ugly broom. It has no protection from critters and it is growing nicely. I hope it gets as big as it is described as it will be wonderful in fall.

Used this plant on south facing slope of xeriscape garden at residences in Reno, NV and Klamath Falls, Oregon. Love that it survives the hot spots at the end of the drive and blooms for a long time. Nice carpet of red.
