A remarkable native (TX) perennial, Silver Ironweed is a standout where ever it's planted. The upright stems of long, thin silver-white foliage and late summer display of bright pink, butterfly-attracting flowers. This heat-loving beauty needs limey soils and dry growing conditions.

Great plant in the right place!
from Millcreek, UT
Comments about High Country Gardens Vernonia lindheimeri v. leucophylla:
I live at 5500 ' in an NW facing yard with excellent drainage in northern UT. Zone 5/6. This plant has done very well and I have moved them twice - careful to dig out big, deep roots. It's slow to come up since I am cool-ish and its a later bloomer but when heat hits it grows quickly. In the fall they bloom and attract butterflies. When not blooming the silver foliage is lovely. I would think this does not do well in a wetter more humid environment. MIne are drip irrigated and get a deep, occasional soaking when the ground gets really dry( more when they were establishing). Great plant.

Used in driest, sunniest part of my yard. Handles the intense sun of my area in the summer. Has not flowered yet but this is first year planting. Love the silvery foliage.

Pretty picture. Pitiful plant
from Western, Colorado
I bought two of these and they struggled through the first year requiring lots of water. One died early the next Spring. The other has struggled the next couple of years. It is a single stalk and has never bloomed while requiring lots of water just to survive.

It likes limestone marl. YIPPEE!!!
from Central Texas
I bought three to find where it is happiest in my variable alkaline scrabble of a garden. It did not like the built up granitic gravel, sand, compost mixture in full blasting all day sun of my cactus garden. It loved the limey rocky slope with half day sun with a bit of granite sand and compost mixed in, It liked but is slower growing in an area of caliche and limestone gravelly marl, full day sun. I like anything that grows without supplemental water and deal with this difficult soil and heat. I have NO idea how it performs in regular garden soil. We had a summer where lots died of excess water and then NADA, no rain for months.

About Me Professional Landscaper
I bought vernonia lindheimeri based on the striking vertical silver foliage shown in the photographs. I was looking forward to this wonderful texture in my garden. However, this plant did not live up to my expectations. It produced little foliage, and did not survive the winter. Perhaps they mean it when they say "western only". It apparently does not like my climate.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
