Comments about High Country Gardens Phlomis cashmeriana:
I ordered 3 of these to replace other more sun loving plants when a crab tree shaded them out. I thought they would be perfect since the size and shade tolerance was just what I wanted. The first and second years they got the pretty green leaves but the overall plant never reached more than about 8 inches. Last year one of the 3 was barely surviving while the other 2 again looked like green houseplants that never blooms. This year only one has survived. I was attempting to replace the 2 but now see they are unavailable. If I can't replace the 2 I guess I will pull the one that survives but doesn't bloom and get 3 of something else. I am very disappointed in this plant. It hasn't ever lived up to what I expected from the catalogue description. I also ordered 3 Hardy Jerusalum Sage plants planted in pretty much the same location and they are doing much better.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Beautiful Plant and Flowers
from Four Corners region, Colorado
This was so easy to grow. Attained it's stated height the second year and has beautiful flowers. It has produced numerous new plants also. Very low maintenance. I've seldom watered this plant.

I bought about 6 of these last summer. I planted some in shade and some in sun, but none of them grew larger that the four leafed one foot tall plant that was mailed to me. Most of the above ground foliage was devoured by flea beetles and earwigs, leaving nothing green above ground. I called HCG and had them replaced, but the new ones me the same fate. No height. No blooms. This spring, the same four leaves have poked up above ground early, along with all of my other trustworthy perennials. Maybe this will be the year that they grow to advertised height an bloom? Who knows....

Arrived as healthy little plants. I placed them in a part of the my PNW garden (clay soil with a little added compost) that gets about 4-5 hours afternoon sun in the summer. The plants did not grow. They didn't look unhealthy either, just didn't take off in terms of their growth. Then when winter came they just did not make it. Not sure what I could have done better but I am going to give them another shot starting earlier in the year to get them established. They look so beautiful and unusual.

Perhaps too much shade
By Front Range Gardener

I have seen these looking quite nice in sunny locations. I purchased two because it is listed as one of the few plants for full shade. I have it planted in the "deep" shade window well with amended soil and have some other shade plants doing well down there, but in two seasons now it has never done anything but leaf out and hasn't gotten more than a foot tall which is much less than I had hoped for.

Surviving but not thriving.

About Me Getting Started
To be fair to this poor plant, last season (its first), we had record rains, and this year we've had early triple-digit heat indices. I planted it in a fourteen-inch pot and placed it in an area with only a couple of hours of sun last year - it had nice foliage but never bloomed, so this year I moved it to an area with more sun. It bloomed but hasn't gained much in size. My experience with other sages has been that they sometimes perform better the second or third year, so we'll see how the fall and next year go. It definitely gets extra points for toughness! I probably wouldn't recommended it for this area unless it improves its performance.
Merchant response: Good Day Robin,Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback! While we do send plants with very healthy root systems, perennials will not grow as rapidly as annual flowers. Planted in the garden, most perennials will require 2-3 growing seasons to reach the mature size listed in the plant description. Please know that we are truly committed to your success which is why we fully guarantee all of our products up to a year from the day your order has shipped. While I am new-ish to my region, I am not new to gardening. Always looking for plants that will diversify my beds. Have been very pleased with most of my other High Country Gardens starts, this one just didn't take off. Following the website guide, I put it in a spot where it got morning sun, afternoon shade. It is classified as a sage - it was planted in understory - was that the problem? Will be interested to see if it comes back in the spring.
Merchant response: We appreciate your feedback on the Phlomis cashmeriana. This plant should thrive in zones 5-9 in anywhere from full sun, half sun / half shade to full shade. We certainly appreciate your willingness to give the plant another season before determining that it has not survived. Keep in mind that we do have a full guarantee so if this plant fails to grow for you this spring, please contact us and we will be happy to go over some resolution options with you. Thank you for your patience! Happy Gardening!

Anywhere you have Soil!
By J in Colorado
from Denver area
This phlomis will grow anywhere---sun or shade, moist or xeric! Benefits from a little extra water. It has taken a couple of transplants without complaint, but as a result has not yet sized up to the 3'plus I've observed in local Denver demonstraton gardens. Summer flowers are nice, though not overly showy; but the winter presence--tiered fountains of seed heads--is outstanding. Larger foliage is nice contrast to a lot of the fine leaves of many xeric plants. Very easy to grow, tolerant of all kinds of conditions.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
