Details

2011 Plant Select Winner 8-12" tall x 12-18" wide (cutting propagated). A recent rediscovery of an old European selection that had languished in obscurity, this South African beauty is a winner with its huge white flowers held over an attractive mat of succulent, evergreen foliage. A sterile selection that doesn't set seeds, it puts its energy into many, many months of no-stop flowers beginning in mid-spring. 'Avalanche' is the most cold hardy, easily growable plant of the genus exhibiting superior vigor and longevity over previous selections like Purple Mountain and Lavender Mist. Not just another white daisy, 'Avalanche' is a unique perennial from the high elevations of the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa. Good for Firescaping

Comments about High Country Gardens Osteospermum Avalanche:

I planted 10 of these along the border of my front yard garden about 2 years ago (this is the third spring) and they have filled in beautifully and look absolutely lovely. They start flowering in early spring and they flower all the way through the summer with little to no dead heading. They need very little watering, in fact we use no regular irrigation system and water only intermittently during the summer and they do amazing. We live in northern Colorado with clay soil and this is the first home we've had to do our own landscaping on (it's a work in progress), so this plant is definitely easy for the beginner or someone with poor soil to grow! It is cold hardy and comes back beautifully in the spring even after sub zero temps! I would highly recommend this plant!

    Q & A

    Suggested Companion Plants:

    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
