Northern Dragonhead

The periwinkle flowers of Northern Dragonhead (Dracocephalum ruyschiana) are just as fascinating to pollinators as they are to gardeners! Two-lipped tubular blooms resembling dragon heads appear in late spring, sure to attract butterflies and other beneficial insects. Narrow lance-shaped leaves are lightly aromatic. With a bushy and compact yet loose habit, this deer-resistant plant is an excellent choice for the front of garden borders, or trailing along walls in full sun locations.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details

24” tall x 12-18” wide. Northern Dragonhead (Dracocephalum ruyschiana) is a bushy perennial that enjoys a full-sun site with some shelter from afternoon rays in hot climates. Each flower resembles a gaping dragon’s head – hence Northern Dragonhead’s common name! Though tolerant of drier soils, Northern Dragonhead appreciates regular watering and will do its best in well-draining but moisture retentive soil with average-to-good fertility. After the plant blooms, trim back by a third to encourage a tidy habit and fresh new foliage. A good choice along sunny walls or pathways, Northern Dragonhead is rarely severely damaged by browsing deer.
