USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
18" x 18" wide. Linum perenne Appar (Blue Flax) is absolutely one of the favorite Western wildflowers for gardens and meadows. Its profuse true blue flowers match the summer sky. Linum 'Appar' was originally collected in the Black Hills of South Dakota and improved through breeding to have outstanding vigor and a long season of bloom. 'Appar' Blue Flax is an excellent choice for naturalizing as it is a strong re-seeder. Extremely cold hardy, this wildflower is also well suited for the colder areas of the Rockies and Great Plains. Planting Guides
Linum (Flax) - a large family of wildflowers found throughout the temperate and sub-tropical regions of the world.

Preferred growing conditions
  • Plant in a fast draining, infertile soil with full sun. Avoid clay soils. Mulch with gravel or not at all.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, infrequent but deep watering is all this plant needs.
  • Deadheading is not needed, and re-seeding is encouraged.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.
  • Special comments
    • Linum is a tap rooted plant and does not like to be transplanted or divided once established.
    • Plants can be short-lived (3 years, occasionally longer) and should be encouraged to re-seed themselves. Planting them in areas mulched with gravel is recommended.
    • Leave standing over the winter and cut back in early spring just above the rosette of new leaves around the crown.
