Excellent for very hot, sunny areas at elevation

Comments about High Country Gardens Euphorbia Blue Haze:
Got 4 of these last spring as a gift. They arrived in beautiful condition and were planted promptly. I waited a year to write this review, to see if they would manage to last through a hot summer and a cold, snowy winter at 5500 ft elevation. They not only survived, they thrived, and are lovely in an area that's hot and relentlessly sunny. I do have granular, well draining soil, which Euphorbia prefer. 2 of the 4 bloomed the year they were planted, and it looks like all 4 will bloom this year.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Long bloom season, lovely foliage color

About Me Master Gardener
Here in Spokane, I have this planted in a spot of poor soil with competition from tree roots (although it gets almost full sun), and it looks great. It came through a hard winter all right (I did cut the stems back to the ground in spring) and has been blooming for months. I appreciate that it's sterile and noninvasive, unlike some of its close cousins. Very colorful, low maintenance plant.

Always Beautiful, Even in Winter!
from Kanab, Utah near North Rim Grand Canyon
In southern Utah high desert we also call Euphorbia "gopher plant" because it's purported to deter gophers. Whether or not it is truly a gopher repellent, it does look so pretty planted around the roots of other flowers, bushes and trees! And I have never known gophers to bother euphorbia or its neighbors, so maybe it's true. :)Other good reasons to plant at the base of larger plants is to shade their roots; the euphorbia acts as a living mulch that assists the taller plants in retaining soil moisture. AND it hides the ugly, dead, low-to-the-ground stems of bushes that are sometimes cut back hard, such as butterfly bush, Russian sage, some hibiscus and roses, etc. This euphorbia is so attractive, with slightly gracefully curving stems that remind me of slinkies trying to stand up! And the flowers are such an interesting color and shape, they always bring a smile to my heart. Best of all, it's truly, truly evergreen, doesn't even go a little bit dormant and dull. Yes, new growth will halt over the winter months, but the existing growth remains full and good-looking. We get a lot of foot traffic at our home (which is also a vacation rental for travelers), and these always-green stems help remind visitors where NOT to step. We are at 5000 feet, part of the Colorado plateau, very low humidity, 14 inches precipitation a year, wide temperature range from cold to hot, Zone 7. After a brief period of attention upon transplant, these hardy plants truly require NO care from us. Who doesn't want ZERO MAINTENANCE plants in their yard?!

This was supposed to be a hardy hybrid for the Texas Panhandle. They all died within 4 weeks. Not sure if it was the heat or what.
