USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Tips For Growing Eupatorium (Joe Pye Weed)

Eupatorium (Joe Pye Weed) is a genus of native plants that are generally late-season bloomers, with highly attractive, nectar-bearing flowers that are an important late season food source for butterflies and bees.
Preferred growing conditions:

  • Plant in most soil types including clay. Place in full to part sun sites. Mulch with any common mulch material to help maintain moist soil .
  • Water regularly as these plants don't like dry growing conditions. Joe Pye Weed (Eupatorium) is a good choice for rain gardens.
  • Deadheading recommended to keep the plants from looking messy at the end of the growing season. It will also prevent excessive re-seeding in damp soil areas.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.

Special comments:

  • Eupatorium are very attractive to butterflies. They are late season bloomers that are a valuable nectar source when many perennials are out of bloom.
