USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
15-18" tall x 18" wide. This stunning selection of the prairie native, lesser false indigo, was originally collected from the Sand Hills of Western Nebraska where its tall deep blue spikes caught the attention of its discoverers, Scott and Lauren Springer Ogden. It is now thought to be a hybrid between B. australis v. minor and A. alba. Grown from seeds, collected off the original 'Blue Rocket' plant, the seedlings will be variable in size and flower color, ranging from white to deep blue. In your landscape, it will be a long lived perennial that attracts bumblebees to its nectar-rich flowers. Plant with Dalea, Ratibida. Seed propagated.

Tips On Growing Baptisia  (False Indigo)

Baptisia  (False Indigo) are native prairie plants known for their showy flowers and ornamental seed pods.
Preferred Growing Gonditions:

  • Plant in most any soil including clay, but avoid wet, low areas.
  • Baptisia needs full sun.
  • No mulch is needed for these perennials.
  • Water regularly the first growing season then much less often during second growing season and beyond.
  • Plants in this genus are legumes and need no additional fertilizer.

Special Comments:

  • Seed heads are ornamental, so deadheading is optional; the plant won't re-bloom.  Cut back to the ground in early to mid-spring.
  • Plants have large tap roots and should not be divided or transplanted once established.
