USDA Hardiness Planting Zones
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
14-16" tall x 15-18" wide. A summer blooming native wildflower, 'Mountain Red' has clear red trumpet-shaped flowers that color the garden for months. This selection is the most cold hardy form of Stachys coccineus with the original seed collected from an elevation of 7,000 ft. in eastern AZ. Flowering for many months, it's an outstanding plant for attracting hummingbirds! Plant it in dappled or partial shade and in compost enriched garden loam. Also known as Scarlet Hedgenettle, Scarlet Hedge Nettle, Texas Betony, Red Betony, Hummingbird Betony and Scarlet Sage. An excellent companion plant for Aquilegia or Campanula.

Planting Guides
Growing Stachys (Lambs Ear) Stachys (Lambs Ear) is a big family of primarily Old World perennials that bloom from late spring into mid-summer (depending on the variety) and are easy-to-grow. They are resistant to browsing rabbits and deer.
Preferred growing conditions:
Stachys grow well in most any type of soil including clay that doesn't sit wet.
Mulch with common mulching materials.
Most do well with regular irrigation to keep the soil moderately moist. But the gray fuzzy-leafed Stachys byzantina and cultivars are quite drought tolerant and grow well in dry shade.
Plant in full sun or part sun. Some can grow in more shade.
Just a few handfuls of compost and Yum Yum Mix in the planting hole is enough. Lambs Ear doesn't like rich, compost enhanced soils.
Special comments:
Some seed grown species can re-seed vigorously and should be deadheaded.
Varieties that spread by underground roots (groundcover types) are easily divided to propagate more plants and restrict their spread in the garden.
Garden Care:
Fertilize in the fall with Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.
Deadheading is not necessary.
Stachys byzantina should be cut back in late fall; the fuzzy foliage can rot over the winter/early spring in moister climates.
Other groundcover types (S. maxima) need only to be deadheaded after blooming. Large patches can be mowed with a lawn mower with mowing deck set high.
