I planted about 4 of these on my property in late May. By July, they had reached at least one foot tall and were covered with little red flowers that the humming birds loved. I planted some in full sun and some in more shady areas. The ones in full sun grew faster than the ones in shade, but all of them flowered in the first year. I haen't seen much sign of them yet this year, but I am looking forward seeing them pop up!

Bloomed the first year

I purchased five of these, planting them in May and June. By mid-July, three of the five are already blooming and 10-14 inches tall. The hummingbirds go crazy for these plants. I have planted a large selection of agastaches and penstemons, but the hummingbirds go for this plant the most.
Hummers love this
from Auburn, CA
Planted in desert landscape, along with cacti, agastache, sage, and penstemons in 6-12 inches of sand and pea gravel. Received 55 inches of rain this year and so far everything is doing great. Hummingbirds are fighting over this garden!

This is a wonderful plant to attract hummingbirds! I planted it last year and was worried about how it would survive it's first winter in zone 4. This spring which has been cold, cloudy & rainy, it is up & growing. A beautiful plant!
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
