This rare native species found only in a few areas of the Midwest is a must for brightening the late summer garden. Its scarlet-red flowers are extremely showy and will attract hummingbirds eager to feed from the nectar-rich blossoms. Plant in enriched, well-drained sandy or loam soils and irrigate regularly if conditions are dry. A wonderful flowering companion for Agastache 'Black Adder'.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Planting Guides
Silene (Campion or Catchfly) - a large genus of primarily Northern Hemisphere wildflowers that includes a wide range of types from tiny rock garden species to large, showy prairie plants and meadow dwellers. Some tend to be short lived.
Preferred growing conditions
Plant in compost enriched garden loam. Avoid clay soils. Silene prefers to be planted in a full to partial sun locations.
Mulch with common mulching materials except in moisture Eastern climates where plants should remain un-mulched.
Irrigate regularly the first growing season to establish the plants. They grow well in dry to moderately moist soil conditions and should be given weekly supplemental irrigation in arid Western climates. Rainfall is generally sufficient in moister eastern climates.
Deadheading will help to keep the plants blooming longer into the summer.
Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.
Special comments
Leave the plants standing over the winter months and cut back in early to mid-spring.
Lychnis don't need to be divided.
Some species are short lived and may need replacement after the third growing season.
