USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Bees and butterflies love the flowers that cover the plant from early-to-late summer, and you will enjoy this unique, low-maintenance perennial in both sun and part shade. At 10-12 inches tall it’s nice in borders, containers, rock gardens, and woodland settings. It grows best in compost-enriched, well-drained soil that is moist. In sunny areas, protect Northern Jacob’s Ladder from extremely hot afternoon sun, it prefers mild temperatures. A great companion for hosta, columbine, and Oriental poppies. It’s compact form and height make it perfect for a gravelly slope, rock garden, or border. Mix with Vision® Violet Cranesbill for an exuberant color show. Deer resistant this hardy perennial is also generally pest-free. Cut back by half in midsummer to refresh if desired. Hardy in zones 3-7, the plant may be easily divided in spring for even more flowers.
