Jacob Cline Beebalm (Monarda Jacob Cline) is one of our most spectacular native Beebalm hybrids with heads of long tubular deep red flowers. Discovered in a Georgia garden, it has excellent mildew resistance and blooms for a month or so in mid-spring.
Tips for Growing Bee Balm
Bee Balm (Monarda) is a showy and vigorous old-fashioned garden perennial that blooms in summer. Bee Balm is, as the name suggests, “bee friendly,” deer resistant and will attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden. The varieties we carry are highly resistant to powdery mildew.
If you have particularly challenging gardening conditions (hot humid summers, periodic drought, or cold winters--as low as USDA zone 4), we recommend planting Mondarda fistulosa or Monarda 'Peter's Purple' (USDA zone 6) which grow easily in most soil types, including clay. The cold hardy zone 4 varieties are excellent for fall planting.

My little bee balm started out well but has been a fragile flower. The two stems that remain are very thin and want to fall over. I have them propped up. It has been attacked by some sort of leaf eater and the edges of the leaves have turned brown and started to curl. But it is hanging in there. There are some small offshoots starting to come up from the base. I'm hoping they will continue to grow and give it some more volume.I don't give up on plants so I'm hoping to see great things to come. The jury is still out on this one.

About Me Avid Gardener
Hi. My Monarda was great last year, but this year they got beat up by grasshoppers. Their show wasn't so grand. Some of them are coming back right now. I don't know if I would order them again. Perhaps they aren't hardy enough for my 3-4 zone. I would only recommend it to a friend in a 4 zone.

About Me Master Gardener
This vibrant flower is a favorite of hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees in our garden. It has been putting out continual blooms throughout the season.

Jacob's Cline Bee Balm is a wonderful addition to my home! The bright red is such a contrast to the dark green of the foliage. As a beginner gardener I sometimes struggle with understanding precisely what my plants need and Jacob's Cline has been very forgiving. We have it in a large pot on our front driveway and it looks lovely. I am planning on seperating it out a bit this fall and adding it to other areas of our yard as a companion to my tomato plants...I read that Bee Balms tend to improve the flavor of the tomato. This is our second growing season with it and I am in love!
A real fighter!
By Kristy the Gardner
I received five small plants this spring as a gift. Almost immediately, they were under attack by slugs and earwigs. I didn't think they would make it as they were almost completely destroyed by pests. I set bowls of beer by my young plant to attract and drown the pests. Boy, did this bee balm flourish! I can't believe they made such a beautiful comeback! Hummingbirds love the nectar! This bee balm is a joy!

Red tall beauty....
from Central Oregon Cascades
This plant was a gift ... a red plant that was not at first welcome in my color scheme of yellow-white-purple.That said, it was planted on top of a berm, near a Serviceberry shrub which is watered via soaker hose. The first year after initial planting the Monarda Jacob Cline was really just green leaves on stems. But this year, it has taken off to new heights and is a shining tall red specimen which is attracting all the little critters and adding to the habitat in my scape. Awesome bright color and so very showy.

Arrived healthy and all survived to grow large and beautiful. Divided most into 2-3 plants when I initially planted them. Bought them for my honeybees. Highly recommended.

I planted it last fall; settled in wonderfully, I'm looking forward to seeing it flower this summer. I have purple bee balm, but am excited about having red flowers also.
