Meadow Blazing Star (Liatris ligulistylus) is a showy species from the Mid-Western prairies. Blooming in mid-summer with colorful lavender-purple flowers, it is a magnet for butterflies and bees. It is a wonderful companion for other summer blooming perennials.

Comments about High Country Gardens Liatris ligulistylus:
Hoped for lots of butterfly interest. It is a lovely flower but was not a big favorite of bees or butterflies. I do wish all 6 plants had survived the winter.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Despite proper care, these two plants emerged in the spring with less growth than when I planted them in the previous fall. Leaves turned yellow, and the plants died before midsummer.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

About Me Getting Started
We planted these last spring and kind of forgot about them. I assumed they were dead from neglect (they looked dead last summer, and I wasn't about to ask for a replacement from hcg on plants I neglected!). Low and behold they emerged and have done very well this year! Didn't flower the first year obviously, but they are showing awesome growth so far. Very excited to see them bloom!
waiting for spring for final decision

I bought quite a few. Some thrived and some struggled. I am waiting for spring to see how many of them survive the winter. I am somewhat worried that the corms may rot. The plant is a beautiful butterfly magnet and if they survive the spring and start showing signs of spreading I will start this plant in more areas of my garden. Grade: to be determined.

This is a beautiful species of liatris that I ordered to help attract Monarchs to my Boston area garden, and sure enough, we had several Monarchs residing in our garden most of the summer. It bloomed a bit earlier than expected, and a couple of the plants got taller than expected (7 ft!)--so they made quite a statement. This plant and milkweed make the butterflies happy.

Planting in mind of birds and pollinators. This is an exceptional plant for attracting Monarch butterflies. Have planted milkweed about two feet away. Actually found a chrysalis on the siding of the house. Never saw the butterfly emerge, but the open, clear chrysalis told my husband and I that we helped just a little to keep these beauties alive and hopefully populating the earth.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
