USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details

Splashacata Bearded Iris (Iris germanica Splashacata) is a favorite in the early to mid-season garden. Lovely pale lavender standards, with speckled violet falls complement the bright yellow beard. This tall Bearded Iris will enhance the back of a perennial bed or border where its height of 32-38" will shower color and feed pollinators from early to mid-May. Vigorous clumps yield stems bearing 8-9 double-socketed buds. Low care, plant Iris in a compost enriched sun-to-part sun location with good drainage. Fertilize in spring and fall with organic fertilizer and that’s all you need for pollinator-favorite, water-thrifty, perennial Iris blooms. Plant with other mid spring bloomers like Catmint (Nepeta), Oriental Poppies (Papaver Orientale), and Evening Primrose (Oenothera).
