USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
(34-38" tall x 12-24" wide) 'Play With Fire' Bearded Iris is one of the latest advances in the development of red Iris, with ruffled red-toned petals that set the garden ablaze with potent color. With 3-4 branches per stem and 9-10 buds per branch, the prolific blooms of 'Play With Fire' create a dramatic impact. Plant as a bold focal point, or mix with other warmly colored blooms to enhance surrounding colors and textures. Blooming in mid-to-late spring, its a beneficial pollinator flower, beloved by bumblebees. Plant in enriched garden soil with good drainage in a sunny location. Plant rhizomes slightly below the soil line in hot zones, and slightly above the soil line in more temperate zones. Keep moist as the plant establishes, thereafter its a drought-tolerant, hardy perennial that will naturalize over the years with ever-increasing blossoms.
