USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

(34-38" tall x 12-24" wide) 'Haunted Heart' Bearded Iris lends an elegant tone to the mid-to-late spring garden. Stately, ruffled standards are snow-white with a wash of grey, and the falls are washed in lavender-purple and intricately veined. Sword-like, three-season green foliage adds a note of vertical interest as well. Winner of the 2018 Dykes Medal, the top award for all classes of Iris, 'Haunted Heart' is a garden-worthy perennial. Bearded Iris beards are actually perfect landing pads for the bees, and as they enter the flower for nectar, they exchange pollen in return. At 36" tall, they are easy-care additions to a perennial bed where they can complement Peonies, Oriental Poppies, Salvia, Allium, and other mid-to-late spring Tulips and Daffodils. Deer and rabbit-resistant, they are drought-tolerant additions to a water-thrifty garden. Plant in a sunny location in enriched garden soil with good drainage.
