USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Tips For Growing Gazania (African Daisy)

Gazania (African Daisy) is a genus of African wildflowers known for their showy, daisy-like flowers.
Preferred growing conditions:

  • Plant in a fast draining, infertile soil with full sun. Avoid clay soils. Mulch with gravel or not at all.
  • Water regularly for the first 2 to 3 months to establish new transplants. Thereafter, infrequent but deep watering is adequate.
  • The plants benefit from deadheading to extend the blooming period and limit reseeding where it's not desirable.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.

Special comments:

  • Gazania are typically short lived perennials and gardeners should replace tired plants every 3 or 4 growing seasons. Gazania are willing re-seeders and can be encouraged to do so by mulching with gravel.
  • Reinvigorate the plants in mid-spring by vigorously scratching out the dead foliage to reveal new leaves emerging from the crown. Don't cut the plants back to the ground as this can kill them.
