Owl's Claw (Hymenoxys hoopesii) is a fabulous native mountain wildflower with huge golden-yellow flowers in summer. With its long, downward curving golden-yellow flower petals and center cone, the graceful flowers are eye-catching. Highly attractive to many types of butterflies and bees, this durable perennial likes average to wet soil moisture and cool growing conditions, not for hot climates.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Owl's Claw is a fabulous mountain wildflower found
throughout the intermountain West in mid-to-high elevation meadows. A vigorous
grower for higher elevations in the West, and cool climate areas of the upper Midwest
and northern New England, it's not suitable for cultivation in hot and muggy
summer climates. In habitat Owl's Claw is often found growing in huge colonies
and makes an unforgettable display with thousands of colorful flowers covered
with pollinators. Also known as Orange Sneezeweed. Grow in the sun or part-sun
locations that have loam or clay soils and provide the plants with average to
moist soil conditions. Suitable for elevations above 7,000 feet. Our plants
originate the mountains on the eastern edge of central Arizona and can be
planted with Phlox paniculata (Tall Garden Phlox), Monarda (Beebalm) and
Campanula rotundifolia (Bluebells).

Tips On Growing Hymenoxys (Owl's Claws, Orange Sneezeweed)
Preferred growing conditions:
Plant in a fast draining, infertile soil with full sun. Don't plant in clay soils.
Mulch with gravel or not at all.
Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. There after, infrequent but deep watering is all this plant needs.
Deadheading helps to keep the foliage looking tidy, but may not extend the flowering season.
Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum Mix.
Special comments:
Hymenoxys can be short-lived perennials and should be encouraged to re-seed themselves by leaving some seed heads on the plants and mulching with small diameter gravel mulch.
Hymenoxys are generally tap-rooted perennials and should not be divided.
Many have evergreen foliage that should not be cut back. Trimming off the old flowering stems is sufficient to keep the plants looking good.
