Gardeners in the Northeast can make a positive contribution to the planet's health by providing habitat in our landscapes with the use of native plants. The latest scientific research has revealed that native plants, not Old World (non-native) species, provide essential food for butterfly and moth caterpillars that birds collect to feed their chicks. Very recent studies by University of Delaware's Prof. Doug Tallamy, in conjunction with the National Wildlife Federation, have revealed that certain natives are better than others for this purpose. Now, we can all pitch in to help the songbirds raise their families and beautify our properties with hardy, low care native plants.
It contains (2) plants each of Meadow Blazing Star (Liatris), Major Wheeler Honeysuckle Vine, Jacob Cline Bee Balm, Fireworks Goldenrod (Solidago), Susanna Mitchell Marguerite Daisy (Anthemis), New Jersey Tea Plant (Ceanothus) and (1) plant each of Standing Ovation Little Bluestem Grass and Shenandoah Switchgrass for a total of 14 plants. The plants in this garden are cold hardy in USDA zones 4-8. Each Native Songbird Pre-Planned Garden comes with planting diagrams and maintenance instructions for proper placement and plant care. This garden collection covers an area from 80 to 85 sq. ft. in size.
