Details

24-36" tall x 18-24" wide. Color up your fall garden with this showy, cold hardy native perennial grass. Blooming in early fall, Undaunted® Ruby Muhly (Plant Select) is a garden standout with its very showy, finely textured bright reddish-pink seed heads. In winter the grass and seed spikes turn a lovely tawny brown. A medium sized grass with thin, sometimes curling, mid-green foliage, this prized Muhly should be planted in drifts of 3 or more plants to maximize its impact in the landscape. Highly resistant to browsing deer, it is easily grown in a wide range of soils including heavy clay. This little-known grass species is native only to north TX and southwestern OK, but can be successfully grown throughout much of the country. It tolerates a wide range of growing conditions including heat, humidity, and cold winter temperatures. It's much more cold hardy and blooms earlier than its popular Zone 6 relative Gulf Coast Muhly, (Muhlenbergia capillaris). (Seed propagated.)

Hot/dry hillside. Grew ok but not fast or colorful first year. Should survive the winter and hope it will develop better next year

Comments about High Country Gardens Muhlenbergia reverchonii:

Even though I bought my grass a "bit late" I could hardly wait to plant it. It came on very well. It grew to be about 15" tall this first year and it had a few blooms so I know that next year I can expect more. It appears very hardy and I can hardly wait until it is in it's full glory. Glad I ordered it.

Arrived looking healthy last fall, planted group of 3 according to instructions. Plants now awakening and appear strong and healthy. Very pleased with High Country Gardens and quality of their flowers/grasses. (Only 4 stars as I have not seen the full glory of the plants so far, but I doubt they will disappoint.)

Planted in last late summer in a difficult area by a drive. Will see how it does this year, but it did winter over and has come alive again.

                  Q & A

                  Suggested Companion Plants:

                  USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
