To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Bells of Ireland (Moluccella laevis) is a fantastic wildflower that is perfect for any landscape. This annual is an heirloom favorite and often used in fresh and dried bouquets. It makes a wonderful garden accent for the most colorful varieties in your garden. For the best results, chill seeds for 2 weeks in a sandwich bag in a refrigerator before sowing on top of bare, loosened soil. Another method is planting after a few hard frosts have occurred to ensure the seed will remain dormant until the time is right to germinate in the spring. Be sure to not cover the seed as it requires direct sunlight in order to germinate.
