Blue Sprite Koeleria

Koeleria glauca 'Blue Sprite' (Blue Hair Grass) is one of the few low-growing ornamental grasses, making it an attractive option for accents, borders, and mass planting. Dense tufts of blue-green leaves form mounds about one foot high, which sit neatly below flower panicles. Flowers emerge glossy green in spring, then mature to silvery seed heads for summer. A non-spreading species that forms low mounds and can be evergreen in mild climates.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
Koeleria glauca 'Blue Sprite' (Blue Hair Grass) is a drought tolerant grass that grows easily in average and well-drained soil in full sun, and performs best in lean soils. This grass will tolerate the exposed condition of a rock garden. Avoid planting in rich, fertile soil, clay soil, wet soil, or shade. Koeleria is a cool-season grass native to Europe and Russia. Prune in late winter down to make room for new spring growth. The flowers grow up to a foot above the foliage mounds; they preserve well and can be used in dried arrangements if trimmed back in fall or winter. Plants can be divided in spring or fall.
