USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
Whiskers Deep Rose Appleblossom Grass (Gaura lindheimeri Whiskers Deep Rose PP26,399) is a very beautiful new Gaura cultivar. This compact grower has showy burgundy foliage and a profusion of deep pink flowers beginning in late spring and continuing all summer. Excellent for use in containers or in the front of the perennial border, 'Whiskers Deep Rose' is quite different from the tall white-flowered plants most commonly seen in the trade. Plant it in full, hot sun in garden loam for best performance. Leave standing over the winter months to improve its cold hardiness. Gaura is also commonly known as Wand Flower and Beeblossom.

Tips For Growing Gaura (Appleblossom Grass or Beeblossom)

Gaura (Appleblossom Grass or Beeblossom) is a genus of North American wildflowers.
Preferred growing conditions:

  • Plant in a fast draining, infertile soil with full sun. Avoid clay soils. Mulch with gravel or not at all.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant; thereafter, infrequent but deep watering is adequate.
  • The plants are naturally long blooming and deadheading is not necessary.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.

Special comments:

  • Gaura should be left standing over the winter to improve cold hardiness. Cut back in mid-spring to just above ground level.
