USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
Carole Ann Beach Strawberry or Sand Strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis) is a wonderful groundcover with attractive glossy foliage and large, white, fragrant flowers. It is an improved selection of the native strawberry from coastal California but shouldn’t be restricted to use in just coastal areas! Also known as Sand Strawberry, you can plant it in any sandy or fast draining soils in sun or part shade. The plant spreads via stolons (runners) to form a dense, weed-resistant carpet and is excellent for holding slopes in coastal and inland landscapes. While the plant doesn't produce edible fruit, it was used along with other species of Fragaria to breed the modern strawberry.  Plant it as a carpet under taller growing perennials. Originally introduced by the Tilden Botanic Garden of Berkeley, CA.
