Bold, blue, and beautiful, the round clusters of Blue Agapanthus blossoms strike both colorful and architectural notes in the garden. The dense umbellate flower clusters bloom in mid-summer, held on long stems that rise from an ever-growing clump of strong, strappy foliage. Enjoy watching pollinators and hummingbirds visit these sky-blue blooms, followed by decorative seed heads form once the individual blooms have faded. Blue Agapanthus prefers full sun but loves a bit of shelter from hot afternoon rays. Well-draining soils a must.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
(28-32” tall x24”wide) Beloved by gardeners in warm climates for its ability to create structure while providing gorgeous blue blossoms over an extended period, Blue Agapanthus will create a strong garden feature. It will fully mature in 2-3 years. With glossy, strappy leaves and tall clusters of flowers forming loose globes, Blue Agapanthus is a bit like a large clumping allium. Plant Blue Agapanthus in well-drained sunny soils that are enriched with organic material, planting the crown of the plant below the soil line. A sunny site with some shelter from hot afternoon rays will help blossoms last longer, but even when flowers have faded, the seed heads will dry attractively above the still healthy foliage. As it is native to regions where winters are dry, well-drained soils essential in areas where Blue Agapanthus is zone marginal. To ensure hardiness where winters are wet, protect the plant by covering them, or plant in containers that can be moved indoors. Blue Agapanthus is just as beloved by pollinators and hummingbirds as it is by gardeners worldwide.

Planting Guides
Summer Blooming Bulbs, including popular varieties such as gladiolus and dahlias, are planted in the spring and bloom in the summer. Most of these bulbs are tropical and require warm weather to be planted. There must not be any danger of frost and your ground temperature must have reached 55 degrees Fahrenheit before planting. Many
of our summer blooming bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched), but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost. See page 15 of our Planting Guide for a bulb depth planting illustration.
