USDA Hardiness Planting Zones
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Cleopatra Foxtail Lily (Eremurus or Desert Candle) is a must-have for the early summer garden. Rising on stalks 4-5 ft. tall, the lovely orange flowers open from the bottom up, to reveal a delicate red stripe penciled along the mid-rib of each petal. Long lasting flowers and great as a cut flower, the plant will develop into a clump with many flower stalks over time. Plant Eremurus in a sunny spot in enriched well-drained soil (they don’t like soggy feet!). Keep soil moist during growth and flowering, after flowering water may be reduced. They will naturalize well when happy and put on a breathtaking display each year. The foliage is strap-like and withers back during flowering so plant foxtail among groundcovers, ornamental grasses or other perennials. Protect from wind if possible and plant in groups of 5 or more for best effect. Hummingbirds and butterflies love the flowers and deer and critters leave it alone. It’s a hardy, easy-care plant once established. Mulch in the fall in colder areas. 4-5' tall x 18-24" wide.

Planting Guides
Summer Blooming Bulbs, including popular varieties such as gladiolus and dahlias, are planted in the spring and bloom in the summer. Most of these bulbs are tropical and require warm weather to be planted. There must not be any danger of frost and your ground temperature must have reached 55 degrees Fahrenheit before planting. Many
of our summer blooming bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched), but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost. See page 15 of our Planting Guide for a bulb depth planting illustration.
